new york is the place where a person comes to establish their own ego. the place is overflowing with egotism, enlarged by commercial forces that market their products by promising the triumph of individualism over conformity; a rebel ethos which one can lay claim to through consumption of mass produced goods. this is nothing short of genius from a marketing perspective. and i was today years old when i realized that to understand marketing one must read rené girard.
